About the Attorney
John P. Sampson is the managing partner of the Law Offices of Sampson & Jones and a nationally recognized attorney in the field of personal injury litigation. He has spent more than a quarter of a century advocating for accident victims and their families. John has handled hundreds of trials and argued many cases on appeal. He is proud to have obtained a long list of multi-million-dollar verdicts and settlements, including several cases covered by the national media. In addition to working to further the rights of his clients, he often assists other attorneys around the country with investigating complex accidents and establishing the liability of corporate defendants.
Dedicated to educating his colleagues in this field, John has conducted seminars for fellow attorneys on trial advocacy and the principles of car accident reconstruction, among other topics. John is currently writing a manual on truck accident litigation and the regulations of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which can be used as a resource by future generations of attorneys. He stays on the cutting edge of developments in the field, including recent research into the product safety and liability issues surrounding driver-less vehicles as well as ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft.
John is the President of the Personal Injury Trial Lawyers Association and a Sustaining Member of the National Council for Auto Safety. He is also a member of the Multi Million Dollar Advocates Forum, the American Bar Association, and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He has been ranked AV Preeminent by Martindale Hubbell, the highest rating for legal ability and ethics. He also has been selected by Super Lawyers in every year since 2010.
John graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts in 1981. He then attended Duke Law School, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1984. His commitment to trial advocacy emerged at UVA with his participation in the Mock Trial program, in which he won several individual awards and was a member of the program’s national championship team in 1980. John worked at a large plaintiff’s-side firm for seven years before founding Sampson & Jones, handling a wide range of motor vehicle collision cases in addition to slip and fall cases and some medical malpractice matters. The experience gave him an understanding of the high stakes in cases involving catastrophic injuries and deepened his commitment to protecting the rights of accident victims. He fights insurers and corporations with the tenacity of a bulldog, ensuring that injured people have their voices heard. John even helps them secure medical treatment at affordable rates and can assist them with pursuing claims for government benefits based on disabilities arising from their injuries.
When John is not advocating for his clients, sharing his knowledge of the law with his peers, or researching groundbreaking developments, he enjoys attending college football and basketball games with his wife and three children. He also is an aficionado of action movies and has written a screenplay for a TV courtroom drama based on a real-life toxic tort case that arose in West Virginia.
